Being self employed can be a really great option for a lot of people. Working in an office need not be for everyone. Freelancing and self employment can help you mould your life into the way that you want. You have the freedom to structure your life differently and more productively. You can also be in total control of your profits and being solely responsible for your own progress not have to constantly be picking up the slack for other employees.
Being self employed has many benefits. For the most part you are able to (to some extent) set your own working hours. This is a boon for stay at home parents who need to put the needs of their kids in front of everything else. This also helps those people who have hobbies to pursue them without causing a hindrance in their office work. If you are still a student then you are able to have a full time job as well as not have it affect your studies. Being self employed also means that you can take a vacation whenever you want without having to ask for leave ahead of time. Even taking sick leaves is completely up to you and if you don’t feel well enough or are not up for it, no one can force you to work. The best part is that you are not really answerable to anyone, not a boss or a supervisor. You also do not need to deal with office politics or incompatible co-workers. You also have an unlimited earning potential unlike an office job with a set salary. You can also find it much easier to build your name and reputation as your work directly reflects the amount of work you put in to it. Freelancers get to sometimes choose their own worth when charging a fee, depending on the quality of work they provide.
But there is a downside to all of this. Working from home can make you quite complacent. The reason for this is that since there is no one constantly drilling you, everyday, to meet your deadlines your attitude towards the work can become quite lax. If the household work increases too much over a period of a few days you can easily get side-tracked and not be able to find time to work. Also a key aspect that most self-employed people overlook is that socializing aspect. By not going to work you do not get to meet too many people and your life can become quite lonely.
These are the reasons why it is necessary to find a work space even if you are self-employed. There are certain buildings that offer individual office pods set up with the internet and other links. These places have common areas and food courts. If you go in to work from these office pods you can not only meet people and socialize but you start to introduce some structure into your life by working in a work environment.
